Abstract
This study was conducted to find the effect of the directed group sand tray play program on the self-esteem improvement in withdrawn youth. Subjects are three students from the first grade in middle school who have the lowest self-esteem points and K-YSR withdrawal points over 70T. The program was carried out 10 times, twice a week, 60 minutes per session which consists of 6 stages of self-esteem formation of intimacy, trust establishment, self-exploration, self-understanding, expressing emotions, self-rediscovering and experiencing self-competence. The change of self-esteem in withdrawn youth was evaluated by comparing with self-esteem scores before/after the program and changes in verbal/non-verbal expressions were analyzed by verbal/non-verbal expression observation criteria. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Through the directed group sand tray play program, the self-esteem of withdrawn youth has improved. 2. Through the directed group sand tray play program, negative verbal expression of the subjects has decreased while positive expressions increased. 3. Through the directed group sand tray play program, negative non-verbal expression of the subjects has decreased while positive expressions increased. As this study includes only a few cases it has limitation to the generalization. However, it has shown that the directed group sand tray play program improved the self-esteem of withdrawn youth.
